Professor Elijah Anderson has published “The White Space,” the lead article for the inaugural issue of the Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, a new journal of the American Sociological Association. In this piece, he observes that, despite the Civil Rights Moment, and the major racial incorporation process that followed, racial segregation persists. Urban areas can now be conceptualized in terms of white space, black space, and racially mixed space. White people typically avoid the black space, but black people must navigate the white space as a condition of their existence.
