McHarris Publishes in Sociology of Race and Ethnicity

Graduate student Philip McHarris has co-authored a paper in the journal Sociology of Race and Ethnicity with Robert Vargas (Notre Dame). The article, published this month, is entitled “Race and State in City Police Spending Growth 1980 to 2010“ and tries to identify what has driven city police spending growth in large cities. The study argues that the state, through relationships between federal and local government, has been a critical component in the process through which “racial threat” shapes local police spending.
