2017 PhD Wei Luo off to Stanford

Recent graduate Wei Luo, PhD ‘17, has been appointed as a postdoctoral scholar in Sociology at Stanford University.  During the appointment, Luo will be involved in the Civic Life of Cities project at the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society and also engaged in her personal research on economic sociology and associational life in China.  Her dissertation, entitled “The Entrepreneurial Organization of Finance: The Emergence of Family Banking in Southwest China, 1900 - 1950,” analyzes the emergence and development of family enterprises, especially family banks, in the first half of the twentieth century, and the formation of regional financial markets based on family connections.  For many years, Wei was a presence at our Comparative Research Workshop and she was known in Yale College for her teaching on the Sociology of Markets.
