New York Times columnist David Brooks recently discussed Professor Philip Gorski’s new book American Covenant: A History of Civil Religion From the Puritans to the Present, from Princeton University Press. Brooks claims that the fundamental crisis in American society right now is a “Telos Crisis, a crisis of purpose.” Drawing on Gorski’s readings of covenants and Exodus stories, he suggests that radical secularists, to use Gorski’s terminology, have transformed the American story from an “upward spiral,” to a story of oppressors and the oppressed.
