Patterson Gives Annual Hollingshead Lecture

Professor Orlando Patterson of Harvard University, delivered the annual Hollingshead Lecture to the Sociology Department on February 15th, 2017. In a talk entitled “Freedom, Slavery, and Identity in Renaissance Florence: The Faces of Leon Battista Alberti,” Patterson theorized several different kinds of freedoms and argued for a fuller understanding of freedom as a concept using these types. The Hollingshead Lecture is named for August Hollingshead, who chaired the Yale Sociology Department from 1959-1965. Recent speakers have included Andrew Abbott and Peter Bearman.
