Graduate student Kristin Plys has a new publication in the International Journal of Comparative Sociology this month. Her article, ”Worker self-management in the Third World, 1952–1979,” examines major cases of self-management of firms during the post-war era and highlights the varied historical trajectories leading up to state suppression or absorption of worker self-managed firms. After comparing major theories of relations between states and such enterprises, Plys proposes an alternative theory focused on social unrest and the balance of class forces that explains why states in the Third World largely called a halt to experiments in worker self-management.
