Position Description

The Department of Sociology and Council on African Studies at Yale University are looking to hire a full-time tenure-track assistant professor primarily appointed to the sociology department with an appointment beginning July 1, 2025. We would expect the successful candidate to have a research agenda and teach courses in sociology with an empirical, theoretical, or comparative focus on Africa as well as maintain an active affiliation with the Council on African Studies.

Qualifications

The appointee must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree or have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by date of hire.

Position Description

The Department of Sociology and the Jackson School of Global Affairs at Yale University intend to appoint a full-time tenure-track assistant professor with an appointment beginning July 1, 2025. Successful candidates will have a strong international, global, or comparative element to their research and teaching with some potential for long- or short-term policy implications. The future faculty member will have a joint appointment between the Department of Sociology and the Jackson School of Global Affairs, with a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching as well as service in both.

Description

Yale’s Departments of African American Studies, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology invite applicants for multiple positions at the assistant professor level beginning July 2025. These positions are part of a cluster hire in African American Studies and the social sciences. The goal is to deepen empirical scholarship of Black experiences—growing the community at Yale necessary for such scholarship in the process. Applicants’ research should fit within one or both of two broad subfields: 1) Racial Attitudes and Political Participation (e.g., estimating the role of prejudice in politics, topics in sexuality and gender identity, race and attitudes towards climate justice, and/or other relevant subspecializations) and 2) Race, Systems, and Institutions (e.g., the intersections of race and class, race and artificial intelligence, race relations in specific domains such as education, child welfare, public administration, and/or other relevant subspecializations). All applicants will be jointly appointed with African American Studies and either Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology and each successful applicant will work with their hiring departments to construct a mentorship plan designed to optimize the applicant’s ability to navigate the resources of two departments on their path towards promotion. Candidates will be expected to teach courses whose content falls within one or both general areas of research listed above.
