Abbott’s research covers a broad range of topics using both qualitative and quantitative methods. His main qualitative project is a four year ethnographic study of volunteer firefighting. His quantitative projects include social network analyses of organized crime, spies, and mathematicians, statistical analyses of risk taking and sexual behavior among teenagers, and machine learning methods for new social network analysis techniques.
