I have two themes in this brief essay. The fi rst can be summed up in the following way: ‘to reach an audience that is not likely to come to the sermon, much less be a part of the choir, abiding by their conventions is essential’. This theme might be labelled conservative radicalism. The second theme develops the conservative radicalism strategy more fully. I argue in my new book for major institutional changes—such as deconcentration of corporate power—on the grounds, not of justice or humanity, which has been our wont, but on the grounds of self interest, which is a more powerful motive than humanitarian concerns.
